To complement a field analysis of public and private healthcare providers in low-income countries, we researched how government institutions in selected middle- and high-income countries ensure non-state healthcare providers receive proper guidance, and are adequately supervised and regulated.

This review aimed to identify key bodies involved, their main roles and responsibilities, their track record in carrying out these roles, and the main factors influencing their performance.
