Robert Smith is the Principal Consultant for OPM’s Financial and Private Sector Policy Department with more than 20 years of experience working with developing and transition economies.
Robert has recent experience on a number of long-term donor-funded programmes providing in-country advice to restructure Harakat, Afghanistan’s DFID-funded investment climate facility; to design the DFID-funded Afghanistan Business Innovation Fund; as manager of the DFID-funded Bangladesh Remittances and Payments Challenge Fund which improved the way that Bangladesh’s international remittances are sent and spent. Robert has provided short-term expertise most recently on donor grant investment in m-financial service providers, the design of large financial inclusion programmes in South Asia and the review of challenge funds.
Robert was part of the management team that ran the multi-donor FIRST Initiative, which provides grants worldwide for financial sector technical assistance, and was a financial sector and privatisation adviser to DFID covering the emerging economies of Europe and the Former Soviet Union.
Robert is formerly a banker, is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and a graduate of Oxford University.
