Robert Smith was formerly Principal Consultant and Leader of OPM’s Financial and Private Sector Policy Portfolios with more than 25 years of experience working with developing and transition economies. His experience covers a wide range of initiatives that support the development or improvement of private sector delivery of essential services to the poor, in job creation and pro-poor market development and innovation. Robert is also an expert on the design, management and evaluation of donor and government funded challenge and trust funds that support a wide variety of social objectives.
Robert has experience on a number of long-term donor-funded programmes providing in-country advice to restructure Harakat, Afghanistan’s DFID-funded investment climate facility; the design the DFID-funded Afghanistan Business Innovation Fund; as manager of the DFID-funded Bangladesh Remittances and Payments Challenge Fund. Robert was part of the management team that ran the multi-donor FIRST Initiative, which provides grants worldwide for financial sector technical assistance, and was a financial sector and privatisation adviser to DFID covering the emerging economies of Europe and the Former Soviet Union.
Robert is formerly a banker, is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and a graduate of Oxford University.
